Our History
My name is Michael Jordan, and I am the original. I am the owner and founder of Jordan Enterprises, but it took a long time to get here. My insight for my entrepreneurship came from a book I bought back in 1962 while at IU entitled, “How I turned $1000 into a Million in Real Estate in My Spare Time” by William Nickerson. This book was my motivation and inspiration.
I started teaching high school when I graduated from IU with a degree in Geology. I taught for two years in Michigan and then went with the Department of Defense, teaching overseas on American bases. My wife and I taught one year in Japan, one year in Turkey, and three years in Heidelberg, Germany. Both children were born in Germany. We came home, and I taught for five more years in Vincennes. All the while we were saving money and buying property in Vincennes starting in the 1960’s. I purchased my first house for $1,200. My parents, who had no money, moved into the house. My dad called it his “early French ramshackle”, but it was a very humble beginning. We started buying more apartments. I would fix them up and my wife, Norma, rented them. It was at that time that I started using my geology degree and started getting into the oil production business. I finally had about 100 or so apartments, but sold them all to trade and purchase oil wells. In the end I had about 500 wells in the Illinois Basin, in Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. But regulations for the EPA grew too great, and I decided to get out of the oil business and into commercial real estate.
I have purchased strip malls, office buildings, and flex properties in Vincennes, Evansville, Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne. We now concentrate our business in the greater Indianapolis area with one property in Ft. Wayne. My son (John) and daughter (Corrie) joined the company about 10 years back, and we added John’s wife Stephanie a few years ago. They are my best partners. We have learned so much and had a good time as Jordan Enterprises has grown. It is a blessing that we can run a local, family-owned business and lease to great tenants to help them succeed with their companies. We now own ten properties with 30 buildings and over 200 tenants. I am always on the hunt for a new property. I like to buy and sell, while the kids run the day-to-day operations of Jordan Enterprises. Finding the next best new deal keeps me young. I am often asked, “When will you retire?” I am only 87, and I don’t see any end in sight!
